2011 Audi A2 Concept |
There’s a new Audi model coming that will be positioned between the entry-level A1 and A3 Hatchback and soon-to-be released A3 Sedan, and now we have our first tangible evidence as to how it may look. We’re of course talking about the Audi A2, the long-rumored successor to the previous aluminum constructed Audi A2 hatch that was sold--relatively unsuccessfully--in Europe in the earlier part of the last decade.
The automaker from Ingolstadt has unveiled a new Audi A2 concept car, but unlike the original this one has an e-tron electric drivetrain. It measures 12.47 feet in length, 5.54 feet in width and sits just 4.89 feet in height, and inside its cabin there is said to be ample room for four. The dark glass roof of the white-painted concept has the ability to switch to transparency with the push of a button. With its headlights, Audi is presenting the next phase in LED technology, known as matrix beam. A package of LEDs and microreflectors generate a high-resolution and non-glaring high-beam light. Nice, but not as exciting as BMW’s laser headlight technology.
There’s also a band of LED detailing that runs the length of the body of the Audi A2 concept car and into the cabin. Inside, the Audi A2 concept car has a flat floorboard. The center console is attached to the driver’s seat; the rear console extends forward between the two rear seats. No word on its powertrain or construction have been revealed, though we should know more following its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show on September 13.
While most reports have suggested that Audi would ditch the aluminum construction of the previous A2 and move to a cheaper platform, most likely the low-cost and flexible Modular Querbaukaste (MQB) being developed for the MkVII Volkswagen Golf and destined to spawn a host of other models including the next-generation Audi A3, there’s a chance that this Audi A2 concept, as well as any production version, has stuck with aluminum construction in order to be a highly technologically advanced rival to the upcoming BMW i3 Megacity Vehicle.
Expect a pair of e-tron electric motors running on lithium-ion batteries to power the Audi A2 concept, with drive going to all four wheels.
