Toyota to Build Hybrid Drivetrains Outside of Japan in Four Years

Toyota has chosen to focus most of its resources on its hybrid models, and more specifically on the Prius “family” and Lexus lineup, in order to recover from this year’s earthquake and the subsequent, and quite substantial, decrease in global sales due to parts shortages.

Until now, Toyota manufactured all components of hybrid drivetrains, such as battery packs, electric motors and inverters only at its Japanese plants. The recent disaster has shown the vulnerability of the decision to put all of your eggs in one basket.

IAA 2011: Peugeot 508 RXH is an Environmentally-Conscious Crossover

The crossover recipe introduced by Audi’s Allroad for those who fancy a bit of off-roading but find SUVs too flashy is quite simple: take a station-wagon model, and then add plastic body cladding and underside protection, rise the suspension height to increase road clearance and voilà: your new crossover model is ready.

The same recipe has been followed by many manufacturers, the most recent being Peugeot with its brand-new 508 RXH that was launched at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

IAA 2011: Mercedes-Benz Looks Two Generations Ahead With F 125! Gullwing Concept

Birthdays are special occasions – even more so if it's your 125th. For most people, reaching such an age is unlikely, but for Mercedes-Benz it is a fact this year and to celebrate the event, the German automaker unveiled a gullwing concept named -not too imaginatively- F 125! at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The F 125! is a plug-in hybrid that demonstrates Mercedes’ vision for a large luxury coupe of the not-so-far future. The company claims that while its previous research vehicles have “looked ahead” by one model generation or approximately seven to eight years, the F 125! concept “looks” much further, by more than two generations, beyond 2025.

IAA 2011: New Ford Evos Study Showcases Blue Oval's Global Design DNA

The Frankfurt Motor Show is renowned for its concept models and automakers didn't disappoint at this year's event. One of the most impressive studies is the new Ford EVOS that displays the Blue Oval's first truly global design language, while also opening the discussion for a compact size sport model.

While we still don't have a name for Ford's new design direction, we do know it replaces the Kinetic DNA and that key styling elements found on the EVOS concept will be applied to forthcoming Blue Oval vehicles including the next generation of the Focus.

IAA 2011: Citroën Looks into the Past to Shape its Future with the Tubik Concept

If you are not familiar with Citroën's long history, you will most likely find the Tubik as another concept model with an overly futuristic design language.

But the truth is that the French automaker looked into its past for inspiration as the Tubik pays homage to Citroën's iconic 1939 Tub van and its replacement, the 1948 Type H that was produced for more than three decades.

IAA 2011: New Fisker Surf adds a Shooting Break Twist to the Karma

As it turns out, Fisker's shadowy teaser sketch of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut was somewhat deceiving as the Surf turned out to be five-door version of the Karma sedan with a shape that is more shooting break than it is station wagon.

Nevertheless, the California based automaker that is headed by former BMW and Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker, says that the Surf combines the performance, luxury, economy and style of the sedan model with increased space and practicality.

64th Frankfurt Motor Show to present two new versions of its A8 large luxury sedan

Audi has chosen the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show to present two new versions of its A8 large luxury sedan as well as the brand-new 4.0 TFSI engine which will power the “S”-badged versions of its line-up.

The A8 Hybrid will go on sale on 2012 and unusually for such a big car, it features a relatively small-capacity four-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to a hybrid system. In reality, the A8 Hybrid is anything but underpowered: The 2.0-liter TFSI and the electric motor develop a combined output of 245 HP and 480 Nm (345.03 lb-ft) of torque for short periods of time.

Using its two motors that are mounted one behind the other the A8 Hybrid accelerates to 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph).

Unlike other hybrids, the A8 can travel up to speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph) on electric power alone. It can also run for 3 km (1.8 miles) with zero emissions at a constant speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) and its average consumption is less than 6.4 lt/100 km (36.75 mpg) while its CO2 emissions fall below 148 g/km.

The second version of the A8 displayed at the IAA is a limited edition named “Audi exclusive concept”, of which only 50 cars will be produced. Based on the standard W12 LWB version of Audi’s flagship sedan, it features Poltrona Frau leather in the interior, wood olive ash inlays used liberally throughout the cabin and special “Audi exclusive concept” logos.

Finally, Audi presented the new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that will power, in slightly different configurations, the S6 sedan and Avant, the S7 Sportback and the S8. Depending on the configuration, its maximum output ranges between 420 and 520 HP and its maximum torque reaches up to 650 Nm (479.4 lb-ft).

The 4.0 TFSI is very light and compact and features direct injection and two twin-scroll turbochargers located on the inside, rather than on the outside as is the usual practice, of the cylinder banks’ 90-degrees V.

It also has a cylinder deactivation system as standard, which in low to medium loads shuts down two cylinders reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and, when necessary, reactivates them without the driver noticing anything.

The GS 450h replaces the Japanese firm's hybrid luxury sedan by the same name that entered the market in 2007. Like its predecessor, the new model is based on the gasoline-powered GS 350, combining a 3.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with Lexus’ Hybrid Drive system that includes an electric motor.

How Google Is Putting the “G” In Green

With bio-diesel fuelled shuttle busses, “bike-to-work” programs and one of North America’s largest corporate electric vehicle (EV) fleets, Google takes environmental sustainability more seriously than most world governments.

Here are some statistics to mull over while drinking your free-trade coffee and eating your dolphin-safe tuna:
