Frankfurt motor show,Lotus Exige V6 S and R-GT

Frankfurt has been another bumper motor show for Lotus, with the sportscar maker’s stand crammed with new and revised models. Some we already knew about– including the Evora GTE – but others were being introduced for the first time in Germany, with the biggest news being the arrival of a revised Exige S.

The new Exige gets the 3.5-litre supercharged V6 engine from the Evora S, lifting power from 220bhp for the old four-cylinder version to a mighty 345bhp – more than enough to offset the 125kg increase in weight of the new engine. The new car delivers 331bhp per ton (up from 239bhp per ton)– which should be enough to push the Exige’s performance into supercar territory.

Unlike earlier versions of the Exige, this one also comes with a new glass rear screen. That means the end of the car’s trademark roof-mounted air intake scoop, but does mean that the driver does now at least stand a sporting chance of being able to see what he or she has just overtaken. As before there’s a massive rear wing, claimed to produce even more downforce than the 42kg that the old Exige managed at 100mph.

A three-stage stability control system is standard, with both Touring and Sport settings in addition to full deactivation. An optional ‘Race’ pack adds a fourth mode,Race, which features a launch control system.

No performance figures have been released yet, but you can bet it’s going to be an absolute scorcher. Sales begin later this year and prices will start at around £56,000 - £20K over the previous car.

Lotus also used Frankfurt to give the new Exige R-GT rally car it’s debut. This has been built to take part in tarmac events in the new ‘GT’ class. It shares the Exige S’s 3.5-litre supercharged V6 but has to breath through a 34mm air restrictor that cuts peak power down to around 300bhp, and the car will also carry ballast to meet the FIA’s minimum weight requirement of 1200kg. You’ll be able to see it on selected tarmac stages next year – and its presence at Frankfurt gave the company a welcome excuse to also put a ‘70s Lotus Sunbeam rally car on the stand!

Renault to Resurrect Alpine Brand with a New Sports Car

Renault is planning to develop an all-new sports car, and one of the options examined by its management is looking to its past and, more specifically, a brand that has ceased to exist for close to two decades.

Speaking to journalists at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault product manager Beatrice Foucher said that the next-generation Megane and Laguna, due to be launched in 2013/14, will be based on a common C/D platform. And this platform will surely include a sports car.

IAA 2011: Kia's RWD GT Concept Hints at Production Version [Updated Gallery]

The all-new Kia GT Concept that will made its world premiere at the 64th IAA is the South Korean company's first ever attempt to create a rear-wheel drive model. It is also the most powerful thanks to a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine that delivers an output of 390HP and 534 Nm (393.8 lb-ft) of torque that are sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Even though development of the concept began less than a year ago, in November 2010, Kia’s European design team has been considering a rear-wheel drive car for quite some time.

The South Korean manufacture's chief designer Peter Schreyer explains: “This concept allows us to explore exciting new design directions, as using a rear-wheel drive layout creates very different proportions compared to a front-wheel drive car".

This is about to change as Inglostandt's new contender in the DTM is based on the A5 Coupe. Making its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this week, Audi’s 2012 racer was developed around three principles: maximum safety, 40% reduction of costs and an impressive bodywork design.

The crossover recipe introduced by Audi’s Allroad for those who fancy a bit of off-roading but find SUVs too flashy is quite simple: take a station-wagon model, and then add plastic body cladding and underside protection, rise the suspension height to increase road clearance and voilà: your new crossover model is ready.

The same recipe has been followed by many manufacturers, the most recent being Peugeot with its brand-new 508 RXH that was launched at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

Volkswagen has finally decided to enter the World Rally Championship. Its contender will be the factory-backed Polo R WRC, which was on display at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

What drew VW to the WRC was the change of rules by FIA for the 2011 season and onwards, which demand 1.6-liter turbocharged engines with direct injection, in order to keep up with the downsizing trend in road-going cars and lessen the development costs for the teams, thus drawing more competitors to the series.
