Production-Ready 180HP Ford Fiesta ST Concept Unveiled in Frankfurt [Updated Gallery]

There are concepts you know beforehand, no matter how marvelous they look, that are never going to roll their wheels on the road, but there others that are essentially production ready with minimal disguise previewed just months before the actual launch. The Fiesta ST Concept displayed at Ford’s stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show definitely belongs to the second category.

Ford states that “the possibility of a Fiesta ST joining the Focus ST would bring Ford performance to drivers in to major segments.” Come on, stop pretending: the Fiesta ST is ready to enter production tomorrow morning, if needed. We've even spied it testing at the Nordschleife.

Ford to Display New Fiesta ST Concept in Frankfurt

Ford revealed to us that when the doors open to the 64th IAA International Motor Show on September 13, it will be ready to exhibit four world premieres.

Since then, the Detroit-based automaker has told us about the EVOS sport concept and final production version of the performance Focus ST with 250-ponies, so if you do the simple math, there are two more cars left.

We're still working on the last one but we learned that the third world premiere will be the performance Fiesta ST, thinly disguised as a concept study.

Chances are, the Fiesta ST will follow the path of the Focus ST that was first shown as a concept model before Ford confirmed its production.

Until recently, we weren't sure if the sporty Fiesta ST would be equipped with a 1.6-liter or a larger 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, but we now know that it will be the smaller displacement unit delivering somewhere around 180-horsepower.

More to come so stay tuned on Carscoop for our detailed coverage of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show premieres.

SCOOP: Ford Working on Baby CUV Based on the Fiesta

The new B-Max small MPV isn’t the only Fiesta-based model that Ford is currently developing. Our spy shooters captured a fleet of small crossover prototypes while resting on a parking lot in Pikes Peak Country in Colorado, USA.

The baby CUV is based on the platform architecture of the latest Fiesta and it is believed that it will utilize a similar engine range to the subcompact model enhanced with Ford's newest EcoBoost powerplants such as the upcoming 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

The Focus and Fiesta ECOnetic PHOTO GALLERY

cars are the readily available solution to drastically reduce fuel consumption and, thus, CO2 emissions. But they are also much more expensive than regular vehicles powered only by internal combustion engines. And the truth is they are not the only solution as some carmakers would have you believe

Ford will introduce its ECOnetic range in Europe with the Focus and Fiesta, proving that an internal combustion-engine powered car can be as “green” as a hybrid. The company says half of all Ford cars sold in Europe by late next year will carry the ECOnetic Technology badge, increasing to two-thirds by 2013.

The numbers speak for themselves as the C-Segment Focus ECOnetic has an average fuel consumption of 3.4 lt/100 km (83.2 UK mpg, 69.2 US mpg) and the Fiesta ECOnetic, 3.3 lt/100 km (85.6 UK mpg, 71.3 US mpg). Their CO2 emissions are just 89 and 87 gr/km for the Focus and Fiesta models respectively.

“The Focus and Fiesta ECOnetic will deliver stunning fuel economy and still be fun to drive – a combination that would have seemed impossible a few years ago” commented Dr. Thilo Seiber, Ford Europe’s manager for Sustainability and Electrification Strategy.

Ford’s ECOnetic technology employs a number of features such as auto stop/start, “smart” regenerative charging, active grille shutter and ECOmode.

The ECOnetic-equipped Ford models will be powered either by the 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost gasoline engine or the 1.6-liter TDCi diesel. Later on, a 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder petrol with direct injection that will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show next Tuesday, will join the ECOnetic range and will power the Focus, achieving even lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

2012 Nissan Versa Sedan Outsells Competition in Sub-Compact Segment

While it may not be the car most dream to own, the low $10,990 ($11,750 including destination) entry level price tag of the 2012 Nissan Versa sedan seems to have piqued the interest of U.S. buyers looking for a cheap new ride.

According to data released by Nissan today, in August, the first full month of availability of the new Versa sedan, the subcompact model sold of 8,566 units beating all of its theoretical competitors, including the Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Mazda 2 and the soon to be replaced, Toyota Yaris.

Spied: 2013 Ford B-MAX Small MPV Based on Fiesta Starts Taking Shape

Ford is putting the final development touches on the production version of its Fiesta-based B-MAX small MPV that was snagged with a funky color scheme and very few parts covered up while testing in Europe.

The subtle camouflage does little to hide the fact that the B-MAX's design is very close to the original concept displayed at the Geneva Salon earlier this year right up to the sliding rear-doors.

The only noteworthy changes over the Blue Oval's concept study concern the addition of door handles and the much smaller alloy wheel and tire combos. From these pictures, we can't be sure if Ford has equipped the tall five-door model with B-pillars.

New special edition Ford Fiesta "Centura" marks 100 years of Ford in Britain

Britain's best-selling small car, the Ford Fiesta, continues to expand its appeal with the launch of an exciting new special edition, the "Centura", which builds on the most popular model and engine choice in the UK.

The Centura celebrates the 100th anniversary of Ford in Britain, and, available exclusively in black, it pays tribute to the first Ford vehicles to be manufactured in the UK, the Model T in 1911.

Based on the Ford Fiesta Zetec, the Centura boasts a comprehensive list of additional standard equipment valued at £1,800, including metallic Panther Black paint, chrome mirror and door caps, LED daylight running lights, 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers, reverse parking sensors and a parking camera mounted in the rear view mirror.

Just 1,000 Ford Fiesta Centura special editions will be available, priced at £13,395 for the three-door version and £13,995 for the five-door. The Ford Fiesta remains the UK's best-selling car with 52,327 sold in the first half of this year.

Anthony Ireson, marketing director, Ford of Britain, said: "Fiesta has been a UK favourite its entire lifetime and it was a natural choice to use this great icon to help mark our centenary. With a unique specification and affordable price, the Centura will appeal to thousands of customers, and we anticipate strong demand – who knows it might even become a collector's car one day!"

The Ford Fiesta Centura 1.25-litre 82PS petrol engine is exempt from vehicle excise duty in the first year.

World's Smallest Engine Ever

It took the Ford Motor Company a very long time to jump aboard the turbocharged engine bandwagon for mainstream, non-sport models, but now the Detroit automaker is going full speed ahead with the presentation of a full range of force-fed gasoline powerplants. Ford latest offering is a new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the company’s first three-cylinder unit and its smallest production engine ever.

Designed by the engineering team at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine promises to deliver performance of a larger four-cylinder unit with even higher fuel economy. It employs all EcoBoost technologies, such as turbocharging, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).

The Detroit automaker is not yet ready to talk numbers, but Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president of Global Product Development, said the new three-cylinder unit “will deliver horsepower and torque outputs equivalent to or better than most normally aspirated 1.6-liter gasoline engines”.

The new engine, which was first seen in the Ford Start concept mini at the Beijing Show in 2010, and more recently in the Ford B-MAX study at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, will be launched globally in Ford’s small cars and will be available in North America.

“Consumers are telling us they want to buy affordable vehicles that get many more miles per gallon,” said Kuzak. “Our new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will give consumers looking for hybrid-like fuel economy a new, more affordable choice.”

While Ford did not specify which models will get the tiny EcoBoost engine, it is believed that the Ka and the Fiesta will be among the first Ford models to be equipped with the petrol unit.

The company said full technical and application information for the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be released in September at the 2011 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.
