IAA 2011: Kia's RWD GT Concept Hints at Production Version [Updated Gallery]

The all-new Kia GT Concept that will made its world premiere at the 64th IAA is the South Korean company's first ever attempt to create a rear-wheel drive model. It is also the most powerful thanks to a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine that delivers an output of 390HP and 534 Nm (393.8 lb-ft) of torque that are sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Even though development of the concept began less than a year ago, in November 2010, Kia’s European design team has been considering a rear-wheel drive car for quite some time.

The South Korean manufacture's chief designer Peter Schreyer explains: “This concept allows us to explore exciting new design directions, as using a rear-wheel drive layout creates very different proportions compared to a front-wheel drive car".

IAA 2011: Kia Enhances Rio's Presence in Europe with New Three-door Version

Although five-door versions of most B-segment cars are more popular in most markets, in order to satisfy those customers that don’t need the practicality of the two extra doors and prefer a more dynamic look, Kia launched a three-door version of its new Rio at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. 2012: Better Looking than its Predecessor

The new Kia Rio will be available as wither a 5-door or a 3-door hatch back. The new car from Kia is likely to be 2 inches loner and one inch wider than its predecessor. Also, the height of the car will be about half-inch less than the 2011 version.

The wheelbase of the 2012 Kia Rio has been increased by about 3-inches which will help in improving the rear seat room. Even though the details of the US version of the car are not yet available, some details of the European version are available. The European version of the 2012 Kia Rio will either come with a 1.2 liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine or a 69-hp 1.1 liter diesel engine. The turbo charged gasoline engine is likely to give a mileage of 50-mpg.

Kia GT Concept gets V6 Turbo Engine, May Inspire a Production Model

Continuing our flow of stories from the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, we now have some fresh news on the Kia GT sports saloon concept, new pictures of which we showed yesterday.

The South Korean maker had told us the GT will feature a traditional layout with the engine mounted up front and power being delivered to the rear wheels, however, we knew nothing about the motor lurking under the hood. Up until now, that is.

We learned that the conceptual study will be motivated by a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 delivering a little under 400-horsepower and close to 400 lb-ft of torque, with power channeled to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps more interesting is the fact that some people over at Kia are very keen on taking the concept to the next level and using it as a base to build a similar in philosophy production model.

New Photos of Kia's RWD GT Sports Sedan Concept

Apparently, the release of the first official batch of photos of Kia's Frankfurt Motor Show-bound concept car couldn't keep the floodgates from opening as today, a fresh group of pictures were posted online.

The product that began Kia Motors' design-led transformation returns to New York with a fresh and updated look, more power, and the same funky demeanor that consumers all around the world have come to love from this compact crossover. The hugely successful Kia Soul is fine-tuned for 2012 with a significant number of technology and powertrain enhancements to deliver more power and improved fuel efficiency.

"After just two model years, we've given the 2012 Soul significant improvements in power, style and fuel economy, making this iconic vehicle the perfect package for consumers looking for something a little outside the box," said Kia's Michael Sprague. "The Soul has always stood out from the crowd and is responsible for bringing new customers to the Kia brand and positioning the company for a series of record-breaking successes. With gas prices on the rise, this refresh adds even more style and fun-to-drive performance, while also improving fuel economy by 10 percent."

In addition to the 2012 Soul's performance upgrades, the new model also introduces a number of significant design improvements. On the outside, Kia Soul is freshened with new projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, a redesigned hood and new front and rear bumpers. New and modern LED rear light clusters enhance the Kia Soul's unique design, while the overall shape of the vehicle has been finessed to give Soul a smoother and more streamlined silhouette.

2012 Kia Soul Priced from $14,650*

After the premiere of the facelifted 2012 Soul at this year's New York Auto Show in late April, it’s time for Kia to talk prices. The revised small crossover enters the new model year with some modest styling changes but more importantly, a new pair of more powerful engines hooked up to six-speed transmissions.

Pricing for the entry level Soul with the 1.6-liter engine and a manual gearbox starts at $13,900 or (*) $14,650 after a $750 destination and handling (D&H) fee, while the automatic model starts at $15,700 or $16,450 if you include D&H.

Kia has not yet released pricing from the new flagship Soul equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The updated 1.6-liter unit that features Kia's fuel-saving and emissions reducing gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology, is rated at 138-horses, an increase of 16 ponies over the previous model.

Kia says that mated to the new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, the 1.6-liter engine delivers up to 34mpg on the highway and 28mpg in the city.

The new 2.0-liter engine produces 164HP, an increase of 22-horses over the previous model year, and is also offered with a choice of two six-speed transmissions, manual or automatic.

According to Kia's estimates, the two-liter unit returns 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for both the automatic and manual transmission models.
