Missed Opportunities Warehouse: Bizarre New Ad for Chevy Europe

In the same warehouse where the Ark of the Covenant is purportedly stored, all of the world’s missed opportunities are held in a sort of limbo, no doubt waiting for sweet release at the hands of Irina Spalko.

What you may not realise until the last twenty seconds (assuming you’re seeing this ad for the first time and didn’t look at the title of this post) is that it’s a TV commercial for Chevrolet’s European arm.

What's This? The Blues Brothers' Chevrolet Cruzemobile

Perhaps one of the most memorable movie quotes from all time came from The Blues Brothers when Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) turns to his brother Jake (played by the late John Belushi) and says, "It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses." Jake simply responds, "Hit it".

It's been more than 30 years since the music comedy film hit the big screen, but The Blues Brothers has achieved a cult status and still remains kick-ass to today.

So much that, in celebration of Chevrolet's 100th anniversary, the firm's British arm decided to pay tribute to the legacy of The Blues Brothers by crafting a special one-off model of its Cruze sedan named the "Cruzemobile" that echoes the look of the famous "Bluesmobile".

2011 SEMA: What is this Oddball Chevy Creation?

This year's edition of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas is a still long way off but some tuners have already begun teasing their custom creations.

This strange photo of an unnamed project car appeared on a dedicated SEMA show page on Facebook. There are no details about the build other than it will appear at the show in first week of November.

While it's evident that the five-door hatchback model sports the face of the Chevrolet Cruze, we're not sure about the body (and no, it's not the Cruze hatch). If you have any ideas or thoughts, skip the jump and head over to our comments section to share.

Chevrolet Cruze Tops US Compact Car Sales Chart in July

Chevrolet Cruze was the best-selling compact car in the US in July, with 24,648 deliveries, while in June, Chevy’s compact sedan beat not only its segment rivals like the Toyota Corolla and the Hyundai Elantra, but also all cars irrespective of size.

The Cruze has proven a huge success for GM, helping it raise its share considerably in the small-car market, where in recent years it didn’t have a serious contender. It also helped its market share in the US rise to 20% in the first seven months of the year, compared to 19.2% in the same period of 2010.

“We are competitive for the first time ever,” said GM’s chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick. “The buyers are completely different than the ones we have seen before”.

The main reasons consumers cite for buying the Cruze are its affordable price, which starts at $16,525, its design inside and out, its fuel economy (30 mpg or more) and its comprehensive list of standard equipment.

Chevrolet has sold 147,620 of its new compact sedan from January until the end of July. Though it hasn’t overtaken the Corolla, which sold 154,324 units in the same period, the Japanese model has seen its sales decrease by 8.1%.

GM has also regained the top spot in car sales worldwide, ahead of VW and Toyota. But this is attributed not just to its products like the Cruze but also to the shortage of Japanese carmakers, such as former sales leader Toyota, due to the March 11 earthquake that seriously hampered production, and the negative reviews of competitors like the new Honda Civic.

GM’s Holden Readies Rebadged Chevys Photos

It’s a global economy we live in and as such, it doesn’t come to much of a surprise when we see the same vehicles launched under different brands and names in various parts of the world.

Of course, it would be somewhat unfair to Holden if we didn’t mention that it has played a key role in the development and design of several GM products including the 5-door Cruze that will be show in pre-production trim at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), which takes place in Melbourne from July to 10.

The hatchback body style of the Cruze will be joined by the new Barina (a.k.a the Chevrolet Sonic) and the Colorado 4x4 concept pickup truck, which we’ve already seen with Chevrolet's bowtie.

“The Colorado show car is the biggest and brightest star on the Holden stage this year,” said Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux. “The next generation Colorado will be an important player in light commercial/pickup 4x4 segment which is up 11 per cent this year,” he added.

The new Colorado pickup will be introduced into the Australian market in production form next year.

Holden is also updating its bread-and-butter Commodore series with the presentation of an E85 capable V6 engine option.

“We’ll be adding to the Ecoline model range, extending E85 flex-fuel capability to the popular 3.6 litre SIDI V6 engine and launching a new dedicated LPG Commodore range to take advantage of the CO2 benefits of the locally-abundant fuel,” said Devereux.
